Somalia: AU Peacekeepers wounded in twin blasts

Mogadishu Wedmesdy, 18 March 2009 SMC   

Twin blasts were on Wednesday morning heard along Mogadishu international airport Street.

These simultaneous explosions were targeted at African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) forces and a platoon of the Somali police who were checking the safety of the street between the airport and the famous intersection of KM4.

“The explosions were two and were targeted at AU peacekeepers particularly the Ugandan and a unit of the Somali police who were
examining the ground if incase any explosive devices were buried on the ground, and I have seen with my naked eyes three wounded peacekeepers and a Somali policeman, instantly after the first explosion the AU forces and the Somali police opened heavy fire aiming at whom I don’t know, and within a blink of an eye I heard another blast” said Abdi Kuus an eye witness in the area who was speaking to Somaliweyn radio.

The AMISOM troops routinely carry out operations to survey the street between the airport and KM4 junction, and sometimes back they had lost several of their men in the course of the operations.

AU has more than 3500 peacekeepers from Uganda and Burundi in Mogadishu.
