Somalia: Islamic Courts Union takes control of Shibis district

Monday, 23 March 2009 SMC

Forces loyal to the Islamic Courts Union have taken control of Shibis district in Mogadishu.

The seizure of the Islamists at the district comes after the residents in the area have sent an alarm of insecurity in the district to the officials of the Islamic Courts Union.

The spokesman of the Islamic Courts Union Sheikh Abdirahin Issa Adow has informed the media that the forces who have reached at Shibis district are the forces of the Somali government of national unity, and are there to restore the security in the district.

“It was in the injury hours of Sunday when we have deployed forces from the Islamic Courts Union who are now fully under the command of the Somali government, to Shibis district lately we have receiving series of requests from the residents of Shibis district complaining of tremendous insecurity specially during the nighttime, the former forces of the Islamic Courts Union who are now under the authority of the Somali government have restored peace and tranquility in the immediate neighbours of Shibis districts such as Bondere, and Karan, so therefore that is why the forces were deployed at Shibis, but no any other unordinary motive behind it” said the spokesman of the spokesman of the ICU Sheikh Abdirahin Isse Adow speaking to Somaliweyn radio.

Likewise the Sheikh added that before they have deployed the forces there at Shibis district they have made consultation with the elders and the intellectuals of Shibis district, and after elders and the intellectuals switched on the green light for the forces is when we have moved in.
