STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -- Three Swedish terror suspects have been released after spending five months in an Ethiopian jail, the Foreign Ministry said Saturday.

The three were released Friday, and the embassy in Addis Ababa helped organize their return to Sweden on Saturday, when they rejoined their families, Foreign Ministry spokesman Tobias Nilsson said.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said he was delighted.

"It is with great satisfaction that I can state that the Swedes have returned home," Bildt said in a statement. "I would like to express my gratitude to all Foreign Ministry officials who made this possible."

The three were among dozens of foreigners detained earlier this year as terror suspects. The detainees also included citizens from the U.S., Canada, France, Eritrea, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Tunisia and Morocco, a Kenyan rights group said.

Earlier this month, the Swedish Foreign Ministry presented a formal letter of protest to Ethiopia's ambassador in Stockholm.

The lawyer for the three said he did not know that his clients would be released.

"It's wonderful, but somewhat surprising," Bjorn Hurtig told the Swedish news agency TT. "I spoke to one of them. He told me they're all very tired. They want to rest in the evening, but it will not be easy with so many people around."

Ethiopian government spokesman Zemedkun Tekle said he had no information about either the detainees' release or the state of other detainees. Other government officials could not be reached for comment.

Sweden, Canada and Eritrea have lobbied for information about their citizens in Ethiopia, where human rights groups say hundreds of prisoners, including women and children, have been transferred secretly and illegally.

Ethiopia denies the suspects were detained illegally.
