Parliamentarians call for establishmentof a Swedish embassy in Mogadishu
Four parliamentarians have introduced a bill in the Swedish parliament calling for:
1. The Swedish government to urgently establish a Swedish diplomatic presence (embassy) in
Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia
2. That Sweden gives specific recourses to aid and rebuilding programs, and especially include
the Somali diaspora in Sweden in such planning
3. That Sweden introduces a support program for democracy education in Somalia.
Further the four parliamentarians writes that the situation in Somalia must now be recognized as
better than in many years. Security is restored in the capital and step by step in other parts of the
country. The new president Hassan Sheikh Mohamed was elected with a broad support. These are
factors that motivate Swedish generosity.
One example given by the parliamentarians are the programs for vocational training that the
organization “Gothenurg Initiative” was implementing during eight years, with schools in four cities
(Galkayo, Mogadishu, Jowhar and Brawa) and training programs also in other cities, with a total of
3.300 examined trainees in Galkayo and 270 examined trainees in each of the other three cities– before the schools were closed down due to insecurity.
This training was very much a model how aid
programs from Sweden was done with the support and participation of diaspora, and the four
parliamentarians call for further vocational training to give people a possible skill, to be self
supporting, to counteract Piracy and enrollment in militia etc. The mentioned schools are still
possible to restart if funds are made available.
The four parliamentarians are Lars Johansson, Shadiye Heydari, Arhe Hamednaca and Roza Güclü Hedin.
Full Swedish text of the parliamentarian bill attached.
Procedure is that the bill will now be examined by the foreign relation committee of the parliament,
who will bring it further to the government to decide.
