A Journalist is Killed in Shooting in Somaliland
Mogadishu, October 23, 2012
The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) condemns the murder
of yet another journalist in the town of Las-Anod of Sool region
controlled by the Somaliland authorities putting the number of the
killed journalists in Somalia in 2012 to 16.
Assailants shot to death Ahmed Saakin Farah Ilyas, 25, Universal
Television correspondent, in the town of Las-Anod on Tuesday night
around 10:30pm local time, according to Universal Television, where
Farah had worked and witnesses accounts.
It is not yet clear the reason behind the killing. The town,
Laas-Anod, is a notorious for jailing journalists with more than 20
cases of arbitrary arrests took place this year alone.
“Our colleague, Ahmed Saakin was shot somewhere in the centre of the
town by armed men.” A journalist in the town of Laas-Anod, whose name
withheld for security reasons said, “Police have sieged the area now.”
The National Union of Somali Journalists condemns this heinous murder
against our colleague journalist in the strongest terms possible and
call the Somaliland authorities to probe and bring the perpetrators to
justice. The union also sends its sympathies and condolences to the
families and friends of late Ahmed Saakin.
“On behalf of the Somali Journalists, I send my sympathies and
condolences to the families and friends of Late Ahmed Saakin.” Mohamed
Ibrahim, Secretary General of the National Union of Somali Journalists
(NUSOJ) said, “We condemn the assassination act in the strongest terms
possible and call for the Somaliland authorities to immediately
investigate the murder against our colleague and bring the
perpetrators to a court of law.”
Ahmed Saakin, who was a correspondent for the privately owned
Universal Television based in the town of Laas-Anod, was arrested
several times by the Somaliland police and freed without charges.
On 12 October, 2012 Somaliland police in the town of Laas-Anod briefly
detained Ahmed Saakin of Universal Television, Mohamed Shaqale Anshur,
correspondent of Somalisat Television, and Abdikarin Olol of Somali
Chanel Television in the early of hours of Friday morning on 12
October, 2012. Ahmed Saakin and Abdikarin Olol were released after
hours in detention and Mohamed Shaqale was released the next morning
of 13 October, 2012. The journalists were accused of airing programs
in support of the prime Minister of Somalia, Abdi Farah Shirdon Saaid
following his appointment.
Late Ahmed Saakin, will bring the total journalists killed in Somalia
in 2012 to 16.
