Somali Journalist Dies in Hospital after sustaining severe wounds
Mogadishu, 28 October, 2012
The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) is shocked to learn
the death of Late Mohamed Mohamud Tuuryare, 23, who was suffering
severe wounds after unknown assailants shot three times on the chest
and abdomen, making the toll of the journalist killed this year to 17.
Two unknown gunmen armed with pistols opened fire at and seriously
wounded Mohamed Mohamoud Tuuryare, 23, Shabelle Radio’s website editor
and program producer at Hawo Tako area of Wadajir district near his
home around 6:20 Sunday evening, 21 October, 2012, after returning
from a chemist he was buying medicine, according to family members.
He was rushed immediately to Madina hospital, where he was receiving
intensive medical treatment since then, where the doctors pronounced
he was died on Sunday evening, 28 October, 2012 around 8:30pm local
time. The doctors cautioned that the bullets might have damaged the
backbone.
Late Mohamed Mohamoud was suffering sickness and did not come to the
station before he was attacked on 21 October, according to Abdimaalik
Yusuf, the owner of Shabelle Media Network, who spoke with NUSOJ on
the phone.
The National Union of Somali Journalists condemns all violations
against the journalists and the media at large and extends its
sympathy to the family, friends and colleague late Mohamed Mohamoud
and calls for thorough investigations into all killings against the
journalists.
“We mourn by the death of our colleague, late Mohamed Mohamoud who
survived assassination attempt last week.” Mohamed Ibrahim, Secretary
General of the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) said, “We
extend our sympathy and condolences to the family, friends and
colleague of late Mohamed.”
Late Mohamed Mohamoud bring the number of journalists killed this year
in Somalia to 17 making the profession more deadly. October 23, 2012,
assailants shot to death Ahmed “Saakin” Farah Ilyas, 25, Universal
Television correspondent, in the disputed town of Las-Anod under the
Somaliland administration.
NUSOJ Calls for the Federal Government of Somalia to give priority to
the safety and security of the journalists and bring all the killers
to court of justice and end this culture of impunity once and for all.
